The biggest difference between working with dogs and working with horses is actually the social part between other humans, if you ask me. Because, mostly when you work with horses, there are either Natural Horsemanship, or not. Sure there are many different methods and variations of the natural horsemanship, but still many people agree that the natural communication is better for the horse. But when it comes to dogs, nothing is black and white in the same way, even though many people tend to see it that way. But in fact, not many people are actually using a natural communication with their dogs, even though they seem to think they are.
Similar to the horsemanship-method of Ingela Larsson Smith called "True Connection" (which is based on Parelli Horsemanship), I use the so called "phases" when I communicate with my dogs. Here we have a slight difference, in the horsemanship you use 4 phases and in "dogmanship" you add a 5th one, the voice commands.
So basically it looks like this:
1. Thought
2. Energy
3. Body Cue
4. Voice
5. Touch
When we start to get familiar with the phases we realize that we are very often commanding our dogs with a way too high intensity than necessary, representing for example that someone is shouting at you to clean the dishes before they even asked you for the favor in the first place. This is in many cases the reason that the dogs doesn't listen to the command, and then we command them even stronger and we become dominant to them, and the problem gets larger. The 5 phases is just one of the many keys to the pure and perfect communication and relationship, and I will for sure explain more for you!
